Sevda Bas is a genuine and transparent actress. She plays Zeyno, in the brilliant and revolutionary series Ask Mantik Intikam. Her character is a lovely friend that we all want in our lives. With her performance, Sevda shows us how precious and important friendship is. Chiffon Magazine meets a wonderful artist and a promising young woman.
Welcome, Sevda. I’m very happy to talk with you today. I love your character. Zeyno is the kind of friend that is always there for Esra. Were there any aspects of your life from which you drew from to bring her to life?
Hello! First of all, thank you very much.
When I first read the script, I thought: ‘Zeyno and Esra have grown up together since childhood, messed around together, overcame a lot of problems their families didn’t know about.’ I think when I look back on my own life, I have very good friendships like this. The one who is always by my side, sometimes you can understand without speaking. Your friends who really know you, who you choose, who are your family. So I guess it wasn’t that hard for me to find out what friendship is for Zeyno. Because I know how this relationship is. I think it was enough for me to think about Esra and Zeyno and to establish their past, to revive this relationship.
What did you learn from her?
I believe that there are indispensable things in friendship relations. For example, always being there for your friend no matter what, respecting and supporting every decision without judging him. But sometimes people can’t make very logical decisions while experiencing big events. At that point, sometimes you may need to step in as a friend. At this point, Zeyno always tries to do something at odd times and finally says, “Okay, Esra, do whatever you want”. And of course, this doesn’t work very well. So I guess I can say that I learned something from what Zeyno didn’t do. But of course, let me not do justice to Zeyno’s heroism that comes to everyone’s aid. 🙂
What is your favorite thing about Ask Mantik Intikam? How do you hope people to receive it?
I think I like that there are real people, real stories in this story. Mistakes we can all make, people we can all run into. Of course, the series has a certain duration and it needs to be filled, so it may take a little longer to understand these mistakes. 🙂 But at the end of the day, there are a lot of things that I say I would definitely do this way for many events. I think that’s what makes the story hot. I guess that’s why people say to me, ‘You’re the daughters of our house now.’ No matter what we call a neighborhood story, a love story, a family story, I think the beautiful thing is its warmth and sincerity.
One of my favorite scenes is in episode 25. There is a very special and emotional moment between Zeyno and Esra. Their friendship is even stronger. How did you feel when you shot that particular scene?
When I first read the scene, I was extremely excited because we haven’t shot such a powerful scene in a while. So, of course, there were things that bothered me about the scene. ‘How could Zeyno not go and see Esra for 4-5 years? They are video chatting every day. She’s already made the connection with the pregnancy,’ I thought. It was a little weird for me that she hadn’t asked this question so long ago. “Isn’t it unfair to Ozan”. That Zeyno’s first word after Esra’s confession. For example, I couldn’t understand what she said. If I had been her I would have asked:”How did you live with this alone for years?” I guess I’d say. But Esra is exactly that kind of woman. She achieves everything alone. And Burcu played that scene so well that she explained Esra’s troubles and experiences so well. I remember feeling very good after taking it. Finally, there is a place where they both know each other very well. And they both know that they will be together no matter what.That feeling felt so good to me.
How is it working with Burcu Özberk? Tell me about your experience working with her.
This is my first TV series project. Although I have made a movie before, the series has a very different camera language and I didn’t know it when I started this. Burcu is also so good at this, so professional that I have said that in the first chapters: I will follow you directly, whatever you do. There was even a long scene in the first episode where we walked around the neighborhood. And somewhere in the scene, flashback comes in. Murat Hoca said: ‘Stop in flashbacks, then Sevda talk’. I said: “Okay, sir”. We started shooting the scene and when we came to the flashback moment, I was thinking like crazy, “How long will I wait, when will I enter, am I doing the right thing right now?” Burcu saw the blank expression on my face and said, “Wait, enter now”. And when that scene was over, I hugged Burcu. It was the first scene we shot together and it was a memory I will never forget. Even being able to talk about whether to do it this way or that way before entering the stage is an incredibly valuable thing. I feel very lucky, I learned a lot from her.
What I like about this series is the fact that there are so many different women who have incredible personalities and great forces inside them. These characters are shown very well. How important is it for you to see female figures like that in this story?
There are women with such strong and different characters. They make this work colorful and increase its reality in the series. For example, Zümrüt and Menek?e are two different mothers. The way they live their lives is different, even the way they love their children is different. But at the end of the day, they both want their children to be happy. Esra is already a strong character on her own. But we see her in different colors at home, at work and with her friends. Ça?la is a character that draws attention with her ambitions and her willingness to do anything at any moment. Do I want such a power in my life or not, of course, but there are such people in our lives. We have friends like Esra, mothers like Menek?e, and aunts like Zümrüt. And seeing so many different and strong female characters together and witnessing their journey is an incredible experience for me. I am really lucky to be one of these colors.
How is the chemistry between the cast?
Actually, I didn’t have great expectations about the team. I didn’t know anyone before, but because I knew my friends’ set experiences, I always thought ‘I’ll go, do my job and come back’. But the team came together for the first time at the reading and I laughed so much that day, I had so much fun that when I went out, I was going crazy with excitement because who knows what good memories I will collect with these people. I’ve been grinning stupidly all day. I know that sometimes on the days when I don’t go to the set, we call Mehmet and talk for hours saying, ‘So what did you do today?’ And best of all, there is no negative energy person on the set. I’m not just talking about the actors, the behind the scenes are also extremely positive. In other words, the day I go to the set in a low mood, it takes about 10 minutes for my energy to change. All of a sudden I find myself singing.
As a young woman in 2021, how do you approach your profession?
When I said that I will study theater first, I will be an actor, my parents were very surprised. Because it took some time to consider acting as a profession in this country. There are still some who do not think so. There were so many people who said that I could study another department and then act again if I wanted to… But I did, of course, and I am very happy 🙂 By the way, I am not one of those who say that only acting graduates should do this job. Whoever feels happy in the profession should do it, of course. I think the important thing is to be happy while doing your job. But after getting the necessary infrastructure. Acting is a profession that can be spent very quickly in this regard. Nobody comes out and says, ‘I want to be a doctor, let me go into an operation.’ But there are a lot of people who say, “What’s wrong, I can play this too”. Especially the digital world and new platforms create this feeling in people more. But I think it is necessary to understand that this is a profession, not a hobby. For me, it is an adventure where working and development never ends, and in which I am very nervous at times and very happy at times.
Who are the people who inspire you in your life and in your work?
This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I guess I’d say the women in my family first. Because the women of my family are as colorful as the women in our TV series. All of them have experienced different difficulties, they have lived very different lives than they wanted and desired, but at the end of the day, they are still happy, together and they’re laughing. I think this is very important to me. I am always surprised by these women, especially when I come together with my aunts and cousins. Because they are laughing so much about the big events they experienced, they make fun of them so well that some of my days are spent watching them with admiration. And every time I leave that house as a grown woman. The transience of life reminds me so well that what I worry about today will not be important to me tomorrow, that I can say that they change my life motivation. I even want to write their stories one day. I hope I succeed.
How would you describe yourself?
It is extremely difficult for me to answer such questions! After I say that I am such a person, I start to question myself involuntarily. But when I was asked this question, I think the first thing that comes to my mind is that I like working very much. So I have no tolerance for laziness. I am definitely a summer person. I love spending time with myself, going on vacations alone. If you leave it in the summer, I will be at sea all day. In fact, I want to come to Sicily next summer and take a vacation. I am a logical person. So, of course, what I feel is important to me, but if a situation does not come to my mind, it does not matter how much I love, I follow logic. But this time I think I want to change that a little bit. Maybe there is some stubbornness. No one can make me do something I don’t want to do. I love unplanned programs. So today, a friend of mine called and said, ‘Let’s go on a vacation by car. But if our route is not clear, we will decide what we will do on the way.’ I have already started to prepare the suitcase without hanging up the phone. I think my best memories were always like this. So, finally, I guess I can say that I can’t trust anyone easily. That’s why I’m not much of a relationship person. I love to flirt, but the aftermath has always scared me. I hope to change that one day.

Sevda Ba? è un’attrice genuina e trasparente. Interpreta Zeyno, nella brillante e rivoluzionaria serie A?k Mant?k ?ntikam. Il suo personaggio è un’amica adorabile che tutti noi desideriamo nella nostra vita. Con la sua performance, Sevda ci mostra quanto sia preziosa e importante l’amicizia. Chiffon Magazine incontra un artista meravigliosa e una giovane donna promettente.
Benvenuta, Sevda. Sono molto felice di parlare con te oggi. Amo il tuo personaggio. Zeyno è l’amica che c’è sempre per Esra. Ci sono stati degli aspetti della tua vita da cui hai attinto per dare vita a questa donna?
Ciao! Prima di tutto, grazie mille.
Quando ho letto la sceneggiatura per la prima volta, ho pensato: “Zeyno ed Esra sono cresciute insieme fin dall’infanzia, si sono divertite insieme, hanno superato molti problemi di cui le loro famiglie non erano a conoscenza”. Penso che quando ripenso alla mia vita, ho ottime amicizie come questa. L’amica che è sempre al mio fianco, che a volte ti comprende senza parlare. I tuoi amici che ti conoscono davvero, le persone che scegli, chi sono la tua famiglia. Quindi immagino che non sia stato così difficile per me scoprire cos’è l’amicizia per Zeyno. Perché so com’è questa relazione. Penso che mi sia bastato pensare a Esra e Zeyno e stabilire il loro passato, per far rivivere questa relazione.
Cosa hai imparato da lei?
Credo che ci siano cose indispensabili nei rapporti di amicizia. Ad esempio, esserci sempre per la tua amica a prescindere, rispettando e supportando ogni decisione senza giudicarla. Ma a volte le persone non possono prendere decisioni molto logiche mentre vivono grandi eventi. A quel punto, a volte potresti dover intervenire come amica. A questo punto, Zeyno cerca sempre di fare qualcosa in momenti strani e alla fine dice: “Okay, Esra, fai quello che vuoi”. E, naturalmente, questo non funziona molto bene. Quindi credo di poter dire di aver imparato qualcosa da ciò che Zeyno non ha fatto. Ma ovviamente non voglio rendere giustizia all’eroismo di Zeyno che viene in aiuto di tutti. 🙂
Cosa ami maggiormente di Ask Mantik Intikam? E cosa speri che colgano le persone, guardando questa storia?
Penso che mi piaccia il fatto che ci siano persone vere, storie vere in questa storia. Errori che tutti possiamo fare, persone in cui tutti possiamo imbatterci. Ovviamente la serie ha una certa durata e deve essere riempita, quindi potrebbe volerci un po’ più di tempo per capire questi errori. 🙂 Ma alla fine della giornata, ci sono molte cose che dico che farei sicuramente in questo modo per molte situazioni della vita. Penso che questo sia ciò che rende la storia calda. Immagino che sia per questo che la gente mi dice: ‘Siete le figlie della nostra casa ora’. Non importa se la chiamiamo una storia di quartiere, una storia d’amore, una storia di famiglia, penso che la cosa bella sia il suo calore e la sua sincerità.
Una delle mie scene preferite è presente nell’episodio 25. C’è un momento molto speciale ed emozionante tra Zeyno ed Esra. La loro amicizia diventa ancora più forte. Come ti sei sentita quando hai girato quella scena particolare?
Quando ho letto la scena per la prima volta, ero estremamente emozionata perché era da un po’ che non giravamo una scena così potente. Quindi, ovviamente, ci sono state cose che mi hanno infastidito della scena. ‘Come ha potuto Zeyno non andare a trovare Esra per 4-5 anni? Sono in videochiamata ogni giorno. Ha già stabilito un collegamento con quella gravidanza’, ho pensato. Era un po’ strano per me che non avesse fatto questa domanda tanto tempo fa. “Non è ingiusto nei confronti di Ozan?”. Quella è la prima frase di Zeyno dopo la confessione di Esra. Ad esempio, non riuscivo a capire cosa diceva. Se fossi stata in lei, le avrei chiesto:”Come hai fatto a vivere da sola con tutto questo per anni?” Immagino che lo direi. Ma Esra è esattamente quel tipo di donna. Supera tutto da sola. E Burcu ha raccontato quella scena così bene, ha spiegato i problemi e le esperienze di Esra così bene. Ricordo che mi sentivo molto bene dopo aver girato quella scena. Infine, c’è un posto dove entrambe si conoscono molto bene. Ed entrambe sanno che staranno insieme, qualunque cosa accada. Quella sensazione mi ha fatto sentire così bene.
Come è lavorare con Burcu Özberk? Raccontami della tua esperienza di lavoro con lei.
Questo è il mio primo progetto in una serie TV. Anche se ho già fatto un film, la serie ha un linguaggio molto diverso e non lo sapevo quando l’ho iniziata. Burcu è così brava in questo, così professionale che nei primi episodi, ho detto: ‘Ti seguirò direttamente, qualunque cosa farai’. C’è stata anche una lunga scena nel primo episodio in cui abbiamo girato per il quartiere. E da qualche parte nella scena, arriva un flashback. Murat Hoca mi ha detto: “Il flashback si interrompe, poi Sevda parla”. Ho risposto: “Va bene, capo”. Abbiamo iniziato a girare la scena e quando siamo arrivati ??al momento del flashback, stavo pensando come una matta: “Quanto tempo aspetterò, quando entrerò, sto facendo la cosa giusta in questo momento?” Burcu ha visto l’espressione vuota sul mio viso e mi ha detto: “Aspetta, entra ora”. E quando quella scena è finita, ho abbracciato Burcu. È stata la prima scena che abbiamo girato insieme ed è stato un ricordo che non dimenticherò mai. Anche essere in grado di parlare, se farlo in un modo o nell’altro prima di entrare in scena è una cosa incredibilmente preziosa. Mi sento molto fortunata, ho imparato molto da lei.
Quello che mi piace di questa serie è il fatto che ci sono così tante donne diverse che hanno personalità incredibili e grandi forze dentro la loro anima. Questi personaggi sono raccontati in modo reale. Quanto è importante, per te, vedere figure femminili del genere in questa serie?
Ci sono donne con caratteri così forti e diversi. Rendono questo lavoro colorato e ne aumentano la realtà nella serie. Ad esempio, Zümrüt e Menek?e sono due madri diverse. Il modo in cui vivono le loro vite è diverso, anche il modo in cui amano i loro figli è diverso. Ma alla fine, entrambe vogliono che i loro figli siano felici. Esra è già un personaggio forte da solo. Ma la vediamo in diverse sfumature e colori: a casa, al lavoro e con le sue amiche. Ça?la è un personaggio che attira l’attenzione con le sue ambizioni e la sua volontà di fare qualsiasi cosa in qualsiasi momento. Voglio un tale potere nella mia vita oppure no, certo, ma ci sono persone simili nelle nostre vite. Abbiamo amici come Esra, madri come Menek?e e zie come Zümrüt. E vedere così tanti personaggi femminili diversi e forti insieme e assistere al loro viaggio è un’esperienza incredibile per me. Sono davvero fortunata ad essere uno di questi colori.
Come descriveresti la chimica tra il cast?
In realtà non avevo grandi aspettative sulla squadra. Non conoscevo nessuno prima, ma poiché conoscevo le esperienze sul set dei miei amici, ho sempre pensato: ‘Vado, faccio il mio lavoro e torno’. Ma la squadra si è riunita per la prima volta alla lettura delle sceneggiature e ho riso così tanto quel giorno, mi sono divertita così tanto che quando sono uscita, stavo impazzendo per l’eccitazione perché ho pensato: chissà che bei ricordi raccoglierò con queste persone. Ho sorriso stupidamente tutto il giorno. So che a volte nei giorni in cui non vado sul set, chiamiamo Mehmet e parliamo per ore dicendo: ‘Allora cosa hai fatto oggi?’ E soprattutto, non c’è nessuna persona con un’energia negativa sul set. Non parlo solo degli attori, ma anche il dietro le quinte è estremamente positivo. In altre parole, il giorno in cui vado sul set con un umore diverso, ci vogliono circa 10 minuti perché la mia energia cambi. All’improvviso mi ritrovo a cantare.
Da giovane donna nel 2021, come ti avvicini alla tua professione?
Quando ho detto che prima avrei studiato teatro, che avrei fatto l’attrice, i miei genitori sono rimasti molto sorpresi. Perché ci è voluto del tempo per considerare la recitazione come una professione in questo paese. Ci sono ancora alcuni che non la pensano così. C’erano così tante persone che dicevano che avrei potuto studiare altro e poi recitare di nuovo se avessi voluto… Ma l’ho fatto, ovviamente, e sono molto felice 🙂 A proposito, non sono una di quelli che dicono: solo i laureati in recitazione dovrebbero fare questo lavoro. Chi si sente felice in quella professione dovrebbe farlo, ovviamente. Penso che l’importante sia essere felici mentre si fa il proprio lavoro. Ma dopo aver ottenuto una struttura necessaria. La recitazione è una professione che può essere spesa molto rapidamente in questo senso. Nessuno esce e dice: “Voglio fare il dottore, fammi fare un’operazione”. Ma ci sono molte persone che dicono: “Cosa c’è che non va? Posso fare anche questo”. Soprattutto il mondo digitale e le nuove piattaforme creano maggiormente questa sensazione nelle persone. Ma penso che sia necessario capire che questa è una professione, non un hobby. Per me, è un’avventura in cui il lavoro e lo sviluppo non finiscono mai, e in cui sono molto nervosa a volte e molto felice, a volte.
Chi sono le persone che ti ispirano nella tua vita e nel tuo lavoro?
Questa è una cosa a cui stavo pensando da un po’. Immagino che direi, come prima cosa, le donne della mia famiglia. Perché le donne della mia famiglia sono colorate come le donne delle nostre serie TV. Tutte loro hanno vissuto difficoltà diverse, hanno vissuto vite molto diverse da quelle che volevano e desideravano, ma alla fine della giornata sono ancora felici, insieme e ridono. Penso che questo sia molto importante per me. Rimango sempre sorpresa da queste donne, soprattutto quando sono insieme alle mie zie e ai miei cugini. Poiché ridono così tanto dei grandi eventi che hanno vissuto, li prendono in giro così bene che alcuni dei miei giorni li passo a guardarle con ammirazione. E ogni volta che esco da quella casa da donna adulta, la caducità della vita mi ricorda così bene che ciò di cui mi preoccupo oggi non sarà importante per me domani, che posso dire che cambiano la motivazione della mia vita. Voglio anche scrivere le loro storie un giorno. Spero di riuscirci.
Come ti descriveresti?
È estremamente difficile per me rispondere a queste domande! Dopo aver detto che sono una persona in un certo modo, comincio a interrogarmi involontariamente. Ma quando mi è stata posta questa domanda, penso che la prima cosa che mi è venuta in mente è che mi piace molto lavorare. Quindi non tollero la pigrizia. Sono decisamente una persona estiva. Amo passare il tempo con me stessa, andare in vacanza da sola. Potrei stare al mare tutto il giorno. Infatti, voglio venire in Sicilia la prossima estate e prendermi una vacanza. Sono una persona logica. Quindi, ovviamente, quello che sento è importante per me, ma se una situazione non mi viene in mente, non importa quanto amo, seguo la logica. Ma questa cosa penso di volerla cambiare un po’. Forse c’è un po’ di testardaggine IN ME. Nessuno può farmi fare qualcosa che non voglio fare. Amo i programmi non pianificati. Così oggi, un mio amico mi ha chiamata e ha detto: ‘Andiamo in vacanza in macchina. Ma se il nostro percorso non è chiaro, decideremo cosa faremo lungo la strada’. Ho già iniziato a preparare la valigia senza riagganciare il telefono. Penso che i miei ricordi migliori siano sempre stati così. Quindi, finalmente, credo di poter dire che non posso fidarmi di nessuno facilmente. Ecco perché non sono una persona molto relazionale. Amo flirtare, ma le conseguenze mi hanno sempre spaventato. Spero di cambiae questo aspetto, un giorno.
